"Kurentovanje", a Slovenian folklore
52mn documentary - 2007
Directed by Olivier Gabersek and Jean-Charles Fouché
At the beginning of each month of February, the "Kurents" come out of their hiding places and get busy with their tasks both in the towns and in the countryside. They are covered with a white, gray or black sheepskin fleece, the hairs of which can reach thirty centimeters in length. Arched by a belt made up of five large bells, they move like beautiful devils to make them ring. While their staff, surmounted by a hedgehog's skin, twirls in all directions in order to scare the spirits of winter away, they strive to awaken the geniuses of Fertility who herald spring. Through these legendary creatures, you will discover a facet of Slovenian culture rooted in still little-known European myths.
